The Impact of CNC Machining on The Manufacturing Industry

CNC stands for “Computer Numeric Control” machining. This is a much faster way of manufacturing that relies on the precision of computer-based design and controlled manufacturing processes resulting in a much faster prototyping and manufacturing solution. The key goal is to adapt and adopt new technology which is taking over the market by storm, in order to get a better quality output and to save a lot on the associated costs that come as a part of traditional machining processes. The way this process works is that using the subtractive method of manufacturing, the entire machining process is pre-programmed onto the computer and with the help of the lathe or cutter, the final object is formed.

Even though CNC is not a very new technology and has been around from quite a while, it’s impact has been nothing short of spectacular. Being a digital technology, it is much more efficient than other machining processes, and is used in order to prototype as well as produce custom machined CNC parts.

CNC Machines are a critical part of the entire technology, and as such, must be built to proper specifications and run on a good maintenance schedule. Some large companies build their own machines, whereas smaller companies lease them from third party vendors for a specified duration. A typical custom CNC machining company provides different services from the CNC machine.

In order to make a product through the CNC process, it must first be designed on the computer and specified in 3D design software like AUTOCAD, CATIA etc., Once the design review is complete and the designers are sure that this iteration of the design will work as planned, it is sent to be converted into a digital format that the CNC machine will accept. And then, this program is executed on the CNC machine, and the part is produced precisely to the design specifications. There are mostly two types of CNC machines namely the 3-axis CNC and the 5-axis CNC milking machine. The 3 axis is not as precise as the 5 axis, and is used when costs are to be cut. But despite that, we can agree that CNC machines are an incredible part of the industry and are binging the future closer.

When we look at modernisation, it began with the start of the industrial revolution, and it is the same with the manufacturing industry, which dramatically shifted as a result of the CNC machine. CNC Machines offer a  convenient solution to the manufacturing problem, by getting rid of the manual labour and effort required in the actual manufacturing process, thus increasing the speed of the process from start to finish, along with an improvement in the quality of the manufactured part. CNC machines help with prototyping, which is the process where new designs are first manufactured in small quantities, to test the viability and usability of the part. By using CNC to do this process, it can be done much more easily and faster, giving engineers time to iterate and strengthen the design further.
